Newbie seeds

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

I was just wondering if someone was collecting seed for newbies? I have some extras from my garden and some from trades that I can't use and would love for them to get to good homes.

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Same here. I'm not sure who is collecting the seeds, if anyone, anymore.

I know but I have to refresh my memory, I'll be back.

Thanks so much for the info. I have a couple more group trades coming through before I'll be ready to send out extras. I always end up getting a few that either won't grow in my zone or will grow too good in my zone and become invasive, not to mention the masses of seed I have from my own garden. I hate to toss seed. This just makes me realize how much I need some kind of trade journal so I can keep track of this kind of info.

You're welcome, I hate the thought of throwing away seeds too!

Thanks, Mipii.

Thanks, Mippi! Now, just maybe, I can clean out my slightly old seeds. I have a lot. Too many to list, and yes, I know that many are good seeds. But how many can one person sow?? (I will admit, I have not sown the seeds I bought last year!!) Actually, I sowed some of them yesterday! ^_^

I'm sure its easy to collect more seeds than you need or find you have something you don't like as much as something new...so many reason to have lots of seed. Just nice to share when you don't think you can use them anymore. I'm hoping to do some winter sowing for the first time, I've been reading an gleening all over DG...lots of info here, thanks to all of you!

Mipii - This is my second year winter sowing. I've had quite a bit of success. I have Chocolate flower and banana canna coming up now, also some alliums. I start them indoors and then move them out to the greenhouse until the weather gets warm enough to put them outside. In your zone you will be doing it a bit differently I'm sure, I don't get much of a freeze if any. I also have seeds in pots in the greenhouse for those plants not needing excessive heat to germinate. I noticed some Scabiosa are already showing there little heads. This is really the only way I can get around to germinating all the seeds I get in trade, I don't save them, I plant them or share them. There is a great germination site online at: http://tomclothier.hort.net/
Good luck with the winter germinating, it's a fun thing to do when it's too cold to go out and garden.

Chuckle, winter sowing in California...would have never thought. You already have something come up Dome...why am I not surprised? You have a greenhouse?

See the stuff my naive little mind can learn. Membership to Dave's Garden was the best investment so far...(maybe naive but not stupid)...lol! Thanks for the Clothier link.

Based on all the comments I've received, please allow me to say, 'God Bless The Gardner' they are a generous bunch!

Winter Sowing in CA

Yes, we have freezes and snow here...not like in SoCal...except for their mountain passes, where they go to visit the snow for skiing!

No snow yet, though. Last year and the year before we got snow by this time. It's windy, though.

I wintersow outdoors. I do not use milk jugs. I have a variety of used nursery pots and 9 Square Foot Gardens, of which some winter veggies are already growing in there. I hope to fill the rest with seeds and seedlings.

Sow much to do, and sow little time.... ^_^

Lol...Evelyn, gotta like your sense of humor!

Yeah! It all started at the GardenWeb website, before it was purchased by a large corporation. They still have that going there. Then Trudy, who is at gardenweb formed a non-profit website http://wintersown.org

There you will find the basics. We have a wintersowing forum here as well,

Wow Juhur, you've been busy! That's quite the haul to be giving away, I guess 'slow pocus ridiculous' really means 'thorough'...

When some things go to seed , it is not that many , as some make lots and lots of seeds that are easy to collect ,rather quickly .
Some like berries , take days and days and weeks and weeks to dry properly . Others still are just plain difficult to handle ..
I enjoy growing them immensely . more than sorting and cleaning seeds , The thing is ,getting the blooms and food is very rewarding . (besides my green teas or homegrown beans being very healthy)
One of the very best of things to pass on to others willing to try or enjoy the rewards of this idea ..^_^

True Juhur, one of the best things to pass along...it's just really nice to see it in practice...bravo!

There are a couple of "new bee" threads that we have on here - have you discovered them? I'll see if I can post a link or two - no one has bumped the thread in a while . . ..
