Die-back and twig death in potted plants

Seattle, WA

I have a number of Japanese Maples in containers that were under attended this summer and dried out. Most
of these plants are several years old. Most survived, but will be much diminished and less symmetric next
Spring. What, if anything, can I do to bring these plants back to good health and attractiveness?

Drip irrigation would've helped in this case. Given time they will put out new growth and you will never know it a few years from now. We had a severe freeze in mid April several years ago and it did a lot of harm to emerging JMs - a lot of dieback. I pruned back several of my parents' JMs just a few weeks ago with no evidence of any damage done just a few scant years ago. These are in the ground though.

Thank you. That gives me a little more hope. I just retired, so I hope to be giving all of my
plants lots more TLC than they've been getting.
