My Rose of Sharon ( hibiscus syriacus "Danica" ) is supposedly a sterile variety. Flowers fell off but a few had the flower bottom remain and the dead petals slowly fall off, something that is done when the seed pod is developing underneath. Puzzled as it's supposed to be sterile, I checked and instead of a seed pod a new flower is growing in the old flower, what stranger this cultivar is dk pink with white these new flower buds are light pink, like a whole different flower! I'm curious what it looks like when open!
Here is a photo to show, I have no idea why this is happening?
Rose of Sharon bud within a bud!
Keith, my hardy Hibiscus did the same thing (not a sterile variety)...I was waiting for it to re-bloom but it got cold here and I think it gave up.
