Experience planting annuals deep?

Mobile, AL

I recently had a large order of marigolds stay in the pots too long before planting. They were very full but also very leggy. I was wondering how they would do if I planted them deeper than the top of the root ball - maybe 3" deeper. They have lots of aerial roots. I know they would look good for a little while but has anyone had experience with planting marigolds or other annuals purposely deep?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I've had marigolds planted deep, and they rooted at the leaf nodes. I've also had stems root that were just laying on the ground. I'd say go for it.
