Flowering Bulbs

Deventer, Netherlands(Zone 8a)

Living in the Netherlands:
Bulbs are one of our most polluting and destructive industries. So DON'T buy Dutch bulbs, and look for organically grown bulbs in your area.
We have one firm www.ecobulbs.nl that produces and exports organically grown bulbs. They are healthier, stronger, longerlasting than the others, as well as leaving you with a clean conscience (where bulbs are concerned!) to enjoy spring beauty.

Some tips. They say tulip bulbs should be used as annuals. That all depends... some hybreds develop many very little bulbs in one year... these don't flower the next year. Instead you get a lot of little "one- leafers" that have to grow a couple of years to produce flowers. But some types (the Apeldoorn's, for instance) only develop one or two small ones and leave the major one. These will do repeat flowering year after year (if they feel happy where they are). The flowers may get smaller. You can help by thinning out the one-leafers, and only leaving one or two per original tulip. For instance, my "Cream Perfection" has been greeting us annually since 2008, the first year that I experimented with leaving a group in. Give them some bone or blood meal, dead-head the flowers when they are completely wilted and let the leaves stand until brown, or until around June. And voila! Next spring's color is ready to go.
