Lye in laundry instead of borax

Hi all
I'm trying to get away from all detergents because I'm putting as much of my gray water as possible in the garden. I know boron in large quantities is bad for gardens, so I was wondering if anybody knows if a lye based soap would be good for clothes, and if it would also be ok in the garden?
