clematis seeds

Edinboro, PA(Zone 5a)

Does it have seeds? and if so, where are they located. thanks

Look where the flowers had been. They form very attractive silver or golden orbs that most of us seem to leave on the plant. We're not as devout as some who try and grow their own though we do have a few people who have been very successful.

I WAS RIGHT!!!!! thanks for confirming my idea........I have picked a lot of those from my white, pink and purple clematis.....now I have it in a brown paper bag and will overwinter in my basement with all my other seeds.......in the spring I'll sow them and if I can figure out how to upload photos to dg, I'll let you know if it worked. No harm or expense in experimenting.....thanks again for getting back to me....

Sounds like you have a good plan to save the seed heads.

You're welcome. Good luck and let us know how they grow for you.

I was just going to ask if anyone has grown Clematis from seed?

Were you successful?
Did you leave the seeded pot outside for the winter--or inside?
How long did it take (from seed) until it bloomed?

Pirl--we are in the same zone--what do you think?

I have collected seeds from 2 different Clematis--just "playing around"...
I just put a few in a pot, put some crunched up, dried leaves over it and covered
it with a small piece of plastic fencing (1" squares).
I set it up against the S. wall of my home's foundation to keep warmer.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks, Gita

I've tried seeds, in a soil-less mix (slightly damp), in the refrigerator over winter. In spring I put them out - no luck, no seedlings - nothing at all developed.

I've tried them in soil outside - no luck.

Maybe it's just as well for me but I do wish you luck.

I will be trying it with the Estonian Clematis "Piilu".

A cute, smaller bloomed Clematis. prolific bloomer in May/June.
Can take part shade and can be grown in a large pot. I have it in a pot.
Hardy to z-4 as these are developed in Estonia--just below Finland.
We are talking near the arctic circle here....

I got it from Brushwood 3 years ago. Look--isn't it cute?

Pic #3 is the seeds----I laid them out nicely--they look like little sperms....;o)

Piilu grows in shade here but it's probably too much shade since it isn't close to yours with your bountiful blooms.

Yes! You described the seeds perfectly!

Mine gets filtered sun. See Pic. #1--it sits on the patio side of the
pole. The outer side would get a bit more light.
When my big Maple leafs out--there is not a lot of afternoon sun at all.
Kind of perfect for most plants out there. NO blaring PM sun!

It seems happy in its pot. Wonder if it will need to be potted up
any time soon--or can it stay there indefinitely???

I haven't tried it with clematises except for one I had to move two years ago and it's quite happy in a pot. Maybe other clem lovers can tell you of their success growing them in pots.
