How Do I Open or Run SD?

I have a new HP PC with Windows 8. The front of the PC has a slot for a San Disk. When I insert a disk, nothing happens. I've even entered SD: in the Run box from the applications.
How do I get the San Disk to open so I can download my photos? THANK YOU!!
