Trying to identify this shrub

Cordova, AK

This shrub is in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. A bit waxy or succulent in the leaves. Long spines where the leaves connect to the stem. Lovely flowers and buds. Any help would be delightful.

It looks like a single Camillia to me. - could be Camellia sasanqua 'Apple Blossom'.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Sasanquas do not have those evil looking thorns Kay. Whatever it is it's beautiful (aside from the thorns) and I hope someone can ID it for you.

Thanks, Alice - I didn't see the thorns.

Perhaps it's a flowering Quince.
