Bull (or Gopher) Snake

Pueblo, CO(Zone 5b)

Since I can't seem to get a photo of anything that can fly out of the frame, I decided to console myself by harassing a poor snake that just wanted to be left alone. I found it because a Blue Jay was screeching bloody murder, and I went out to see what it was upset about. I was hoping it would stick around and eat some gophers, so I even pulled the gopher traps out of the holes.
But now it is the next day, there is fresh gopher digging in my lawn, and the birds are not complaining about a snake. So I guess I'll set traps again (sorry, animal lovers - the gophers eat the roots off the landscaping, and have done hundreds of dollars worth of damage)

Camouflage is pretty good - I missed getting a photo of it crawling across leaves and mulch, where it really matched. Snake was 3 1/2 feet long.

If it's a Gopher Snake, it'll be interested in hunting Gophers.

But if it's a Bull Snake, it'll only be interested in hunting Bulls.

;-)
