Does anyone have anything showy blooming right now that is Red or White or Blue?
I try to do red, white and blue annuals - but some permanent perennials would be nice, too. If they attract Hummingbirds or Butterflies, or are fragrant - that would be a bonus.
Red: I use Lady in Red Salvia
White: White Petunias (later in season, white 4-O'clocks)
Blue: Bachelor Buttons -they are finishing, I haven't found a good follow-up. A good true blue seems the most difficult color to find.
Red, White, and Blue?
Red: Scarlet Runner Bean blossoms
White: White Yarrow
Blue: Nasturtium leaves
Happy Independence Day, Pollengarden!
For red, look at Knautia mascedonica (maroon/red), roses, zinnias, penstemon, Dahlias, annual flax (deep red)
Blue: Centaurea montana (mountain bluet or perennial cornflower) 24" all season when deadheaded (DH), Salvia nemerosa 24" all season when DH, Ceratostigma plumbagoides, (late bloomer), Penstemon Rocky Mountain blue or Pike's Peak Purple (all summer on the later at 12-18"), Delphinium either belmosums or elatums and then there's grandifloras at 12-18" several blue shades from light to dark, these short ones bloom all season til frost (DH).
White: again Salvia nemerosa (alba), Centaurea montana Amethyst in Snow 24" (DH) all season bloom, Centranthus ruber Alba, Catanche carulea in light blue/purple or white 24" and all season, Scabiosa columbaria 30-36", blue/purple or white all summer, Daisies, I love my Beckies at 48" all summer with (DH).
Hope this gives you a few ideas.... Kathy

Thanks. What is the blue flower in the foreground in you photo? Trachemene or Scabiosa? And does it have a variety name?
Seeds might be better - transplants have a tough time here.
If you can - thanks.
I usually buy seed rather than save my own - but we're having such a bad year, I have made a resolution to save seed from anything that does well this year.
