Black Rat Snakes courting

Walkerton, VA(Zone 7a)

I took this photo at about 5:00 PM. They were still at it the following morning. Really spooked my wife - I thought it was fascinating. Fortunately the Bluebird nest box was vacant.

I can see two heads, but it looks like there might have been 3?

Well, Pollen, I wondered the same thing; but, since they were having so much fun, I resisted the temptation to untangle them to get a head count.

Yikes, I'm with your wife, I'd be spooked also. I bet she never goes out without looking up now !!

Do snakes mate in trees??

Pueblo, CO(Zone 5b)

Just guessing, but I think that is just where she happened to be when he found her.

There was a flood on the Platte River in 1973. There were snakes - including rattlesnakes - up trees and utility poles, trying to get away from the water. So I would say snakes can go just about any place if they have motivation.
