Japanese maple substitute

Norridgewock, ME(Zone 5a)

We planted Korean maple (Acer pseudosieboldeanum) Arctic Fox today because they are supposed to be hardier than Japanese maples but have similar leaf shape. We have run out of space in our garage for hauling potted maples in for the winter. Last year I planted one Japanese maple in the yard in a protected spot and it made it through last winter, but this spot by the new deck is not protected and I didn't want to risk putting in a JM and then have it die a few years later. I liked the look of the tree and have high hopes--time will tell.

Pinus koraiensis Oculis Draconis. It will outgrow that space pretty quickly (grows 6-9 inches per year) but it is a good spot for it to grow up a bit before moving to it's ultimate home.
