What is the deal with this nepeta? Mutant!

(Carisa) Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

This is nepeta "Walker's Low" and it is planted in an area that is currently under construction. It is one of only a handful of plants that have survived all of the tromping, digging, etc that this area has undergone and still is undergoing. This was anticipated to happen, you know, to lose most of this area, but necessary. The wierd thing is that the nepata came back up and seems to be growing a side branch off of it, which is now in full bloom and the rest of the plant isn't. This branch has been blooming for weeks and seems to have a different habit than the rest of the plant (it is a single branch, I checked). Anyone else get offshoots like this? This one has been blooming for weeks, it's so strange b/c the rest of the plant just keeps growing normally, ignoring the mutant attached to it! Please ignore the chaos around the plant--under construction (or demolition, whichever way you look at it)!
