Beautiful Karen. Happy Mothers Day!
Lynn
Beautiful plants. Happy Mother's Day to all. JB
Nice pictures to start the thread, Karen!!
Earle
Great pics Karen!! Always great close up pics ::)))
Sister Lynn...I think I need to send you a d-mail after while. Of course my Kohlerias and other plants dried out while I was gone. (Isn't that what usually happens??? LOL) Anyway, I have a Kohleria blooming that has a darker pink on the upper petals and lighter on the lower ones. I will try to get a pic a little later and send it to you but if you think you know what it might be, could you please send me a d-mail and let me know??? I would greatly appreciate it::))))
Connie
Nice blooms!! Are you growing those in 12-16 oz solo cups Karen? They look happy whatever you have them in :)))
Connie
They are 16 oz solo cups.
They are really pretty Karen
Lynn
Very nice JB!
Yes you do see buds on that strep, and you will love Spin Art when it blooms! It is still one of my favorites! Your AV looks good too. Good luck with them and enjoy!
Karen
Yay,I am excited for you!
Lynn
There are buds on the AV too I think I see them. Under the leaf.
Sticky Wicket is a good bloomer! I have one too. Get a "Fancy trail" too, they CONSTANTLY bloom!
I will be bankrupt if you keep this up. Fancy Trail you say.
Congrats JB ::)) Might as well go for it and get some more trailers lol. I have removed LOTS of spent blooms on my plants and I am getting ready to give them their weekly spray and I need to clean my stands today. Thought I would take a pic for some possible future "eye candy" These are great bloomers also and I have more buds forming :) Like my "expensive containers?? LOL!!!! Hey...they work lol.
Connie
They look terrific Sis!
Lynn
Oh Connie, they are so amazingly beautiful. Wow, I can hardly wait to have some bloom...even grow would be nice. LOL
I have two or three others but they are still small. It won't take them long to grow for you. Best of luck, you're on your way :)
Connie
I am surprised they are such fast growers since it takes them forever to reproduce.
Connie they are beautiful! And your pics are great! :)
If you don't mind... What is your "weekly spray"? A preventative for ???
I like the middle one of the individual photos...
Is that one AV? It's very pretty!
Karen, I can't capture the beauty like you do lol!!! Yep, one A.V. :) It's Ramblin Amethyst. I spray weakly weekly. Thad is such a good friend of ours (grin) For others who don't know this method, mix up 1/8 tsp. of fertilizer to 1 gal. of either rain or distilled water NOT TAP and spray your plants weekly. You can do this under your grow lights. The leaves will absorb about 95% of the fertilizer as opposed to 10% thru regular watering.
Connie
OK all you AV specialists, this old lady needs some answers. Ready?????
I started the leaves the way you all suggested, I did three leaves and now I see two of them have baby leaves. How long do I wait to transplant them into little pots?
What size pot should they go in. 2" or 3" ? It would seem to me the smaller pot is the best so the roots get strong not stringy and long. But, I thought I should ask since this is my very first shot at propagating AVs. I am honestly so excited i could jump up and down. I never thought they would grow but my goodness it takes awhile for them to actually show new growth.
Thanks in advance. JB
CONGRATS on your success ::)) JB, what size are the A.V.s? Standard, semi, trailer, etc. Babies need to be nice size before you remove them from their Momma. You also want to make sure they are at least 50% green if variegated before you remove them. (You don't want them real pale for green leafed ones either) If there is not enough chlorophyll, they won't survive. You are right on the smaller pot size. Most of us actually put the babies in solo cups. They like they roots hugged and if you go with too big of a pot, they can root rot real easy. Please show us pics of your success ::))
Now, maybe an "A.V. specialist" will come on here and cover it all for ya ::)) I'm just a hobby grower (wink)
Connie
Connie, the pots I use are even smaller than a solo cut. They are super nice and sturdy with drain holes in the bottom. Little white guys. The plant I took these from is a noid my daughter had and I have no idea I think it is just a standard. These babies are not ready for a move yet. They are much too tiny. I will take a picture of them one of these days and put it on here so you can see my wonderful success results. LOL I am happy but it was because I did what you all told me to do and did not over water or over watch them.
Whoo Hoo for you Jacquie! I would love to see pictures too.
Lynn
Great job JB! We ALL want to see pics!
I am anxiously awaiting babies to appear on two AV leaves I have down...
(Yes, I actually am trying to grow a couple of AVs too! ;)
Karen
NICE Holly !! Sally is as precious as they come::))
I think we've all been occupied with spring "to do" lists lol. I am guilty myself and so far behind on repotting BUT I am working on it again today (wink)
Connie
Here are the babies of my noid AV. Now comes the questions of what is next.
The one on the right was planted the same time as the one on the left. The difference is I mixed the medium for the first one and the second one I used only perlite (sp?) and you see the difference, the only reason I did not throw the one away was because it never dried up and that was my only clue there must be something going on.
How do I know if they have enough chlorophyll?
Thanks for showing us...WONDERFUL little babies there!!
In the first pic, I don't have the Momma to compare to but those bigger leaves look about the size for dividing and repotting. Wait until the other little ones catch up to that size. Your second one does need to wait :) They will grow fine in perlite. It could be the hybrid. Sometimes I can see mouse ears pretty quickly and I have had to wait close to six months before seeing anything. The leaves on the bottom of an A.V. take longer to root than the next row up, so sometimes where the leaf comes from will make a difference. You can tell the chlorophyll by the color green. If it is pale/yellow you can green them up with fish emulsion or some epsom salt. These won't burn their tender little roots :) See the difference in your two, the one on the right looks a lighter green (to me) than the one on the left. Now it could be just a different color hue of green too which is normal.
You are doing such an awesome job!!
Connie
Forgot to ask...are those little baby food containers? I got a bunch of those from my daughter and LOVE THEM :) In fact, leaves I start from trailers do quite well in them because of the shape, the can start spreading lol.
Connie
Holly,
What a lovely variety of plants! Love that yellow.
Lynn
Connie, I use fish emulsion all the time. should I put it on those babies now? in the perlite? How much. I just watered them today for the first time in weeks. Yes, they are baby food containers. I save all kinds of silly things and when the dog was on baby food I liked those little containers so much to keep nails etc. in that I started to save them and now I am half tempted to buy more baby food just to get them. LOL I was wondering if you can cut AV leaves up and down like you can strep leaves to propagate them? Or can you cut the stem off so each vein touches the medium?
My only problem is, I forget to change medium when I begin to repot and sometimes I find myself using the same soil for both cactus babies and AV or strep.....I will no doubt kill them except the soil I use is very good with moisture and I seldom have to water as much and find I do not overwater with it. I use a water wand on my cactus babies because they do not need nearly as much water and I can not even guess when they are dry on the bottom without a wand. That reminds me, i need to order a new one. Never an end is there?
I mix mine according to the directions on the back because it is mild and I've never had a problem using it. You can fertilize in perlite but use it next time they need a little sip. As the babies/roots grow they will drink a little more :) Sometimes you will cut about 1/3-1/2 off the top of the leaf (you do that so the energy will go into producing babies) and some are successful in rooting the top portion. I haven't tried it because I don't need the extras. You can remove the mid rib of a strep leaf and produce more babies that way or plant it like an A.V. leaf for less babies but you can't cut an A.V. leaf down the center. If anyone ever has....please let me know. If you ever get one with the stem broken off, you can cut the leaf for a "makeshift" stem ::))
We have just been blessed with a second grandbaby born in May so....I am hoping I can get some more of those containers. They are so handy lol!! Nope...it never ends lol!!
