My Plant Delights Pilgrimage

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

I was in NC last week to help out my Mom and Dad. Fortuitously, my brother was arriving late afternoon at Raleigh-Durham airport and needed to be picked up. Also fortuitously, Plant Delights Nursery was having one of its open house weekends. So my sister and I killed two birds with one stone and had a blast at PD!
I acquired 'Electrocution' and 'Hacksaw' to beef up my minis collection and also because I grow 'Elvis Lives' a parent of 'Electrocution'. My brother in law is putting in a hosta bed for large to EL hosta and commissioned us to buy "12" hostas. We came out with 7 for him including 'Stormy Seas', 'Cathedral Windows', 'Hudson Bay', 'glory Hallelujah', 'Paradigm', and I can't remember the other two. I will have to place an order now that I am home since I couldn't fit any bigger ones in my suitcase for the flight home.
It was a beautiful sunny day and I will post some of the pictures I took of the display gardens in a bit. I wanted to bring home every small and mini that they had in the seedling test patch!!! Loved them all, even though they are just cross numbers at the moment.

OMG! I just saw this and my DB lives in Durham. I have been wanting to go to 'Plants Delights". One of my favorite nurseries! I love all those that you got and I think I have all those except Stormy Seas. My mini collection is down to two I think a snow mouse and a frosted mouse ears and a Lakeside Scampy, lol. I am so upset because my Pandora's Box has died. I do need more minis.

It really is awesome isn't it? Next time you go check out Big Bloomers, it is nearby, they usually have an excellent selection of Hostas and the prices are unbelievable. Wear your hiking boots because this place really is BIG.

Sounds wonderful, I think Niche Gardens is near there too, might as well make a day of it. For unbelievable prices on-line try Green Mountain, also they have flat rate shipping and the plants are big. http://www.greenmountainhosta.com/

I don't plan to be back in the RD area anytime soon but I have their current catalog. Now I live in Florida and I left all the aforementioned hosta back in MA. Not sure that Hosta will do well here in the Orlando area.

One of my neighbors moved here (Z.9a) from up north with hundreds of different hostas. The heat and humidity took most all of them but she has had good luck with the mini's in full shade. I have found there are heat tolerant varieties like Sun & Substance.

Martha,
I got my hosta education from Plant Delights! Check out the LEARN section and go to 'Plant Articles', they have a great article about 'Hostas for Warm Climates'. Choose Hostas with low chill requirements, I even have some in the sun but I am in zone 8, so in zone 9 you would have to do shade only and it is best to plant them out in pots so more cold weather can get to the roots. My low chill varieties are in the ground. I loose a couple every year but I buy ten so it works out ok. LOL. Also lots of water!

ardesia,
Tell your friend about Plant Delights and choose Low Chill Hostas. :) I buy the small ones just in case, but if something works out good I can buy 4 more!
I have had several that do good in the heat and in my zone can tolerate some sun but she should stick with the shade and plant them in pots. Hope this helps, also anything with plantaginea in the back ground does well.

I have shade. I haven't gotten around to doing any major outdoor landscaping yet, but the east side of my house only gets about an hour of sun a day as there is a very tall tree on the neighbors side of the fence. It is also on the same side as the outdoor faucet so watering won't be a problem. Good to know about Sum and Substance, since I had to leave 4 magnificent ones in MA and I might get one for here.
