What species is this plant; pineapple relative

Zephyrhills, FL

Can someone identify this plant for me please? I think it is related to the pineapple. It becomes very colorful in the spring. It has some mean thorns alongside the long, leathery leaves. I also know of someone in Puerto Rico who has the same plant, but he doesn't know its identity either. It's not common there. Thank You.

Beautiful! Yes, I think a relative of the pineapple (a bomeliad) but I don't recognize that particular plant. You might try posting on the Plant ID Forum as well - usually gets a speedy answer.

I am by no means an expert, but I have alot of these and believe they are bromeliad- Bromelia balansae -Heart of Flame
They have incredible thorns and are hard to work around in the garden. I have had them for years and multiply easily.

After comparing pictures, I believe that just might be it.
