Onions

Spring City, TN

When I'm buying bagged yellow onions from the grocer, I find that some have nice thick rings, some are very thin and flimsy. The fat ones tend to be sweeter as well. Is it a growing condition? Or a species issue?

(I'd like to know because I'm planning on growing some myself.)

As I understand it each set of leaves creates a ring. So, it would seem that lots good healthy leaves should help to produce solid bulbs.

So it sounds like a water issue -- thin rings, poor water...?

That is part of it. Onions love water.

Lack of water will also cause the middles to be dry and shrunken

Water issues are also why many turn to growing Leeks ..

I love my Leeks ... just sayin'. :)
