June 8th, 2013 RU

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I'll be very busy this coming week. Last year it was planting. This year I am in Miami but want to get this up and going as promised. Here it is, the beginning of the Summer 2013 RU thread. A separate thread will be started soon for trades. Once again the invite is cut and pasted from previous years with adjustments for the date. Here goes...

Back by popular demand, we're going to do it once more. The date is Saturday, June 8th, from 10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.. Reread this post as needed. The guest list will be updated here.

Plant swaps will be conducted on a separate 2012 RU and White Elephant Swap thread. Please discuss plant info there to keep this planning thread from getting clogged. I'll start that thread in a week or so when I'm back in Georgia. We can have another white elephant swap if there are willing participants. There is no garden gift, new or used, that goes unappreciated by a fellow gardener and none to small to share. It's a good way to clean out your garden closet. For those not knowledgeable about the white elephant swap, not to worry, all will be revealed.

The gathering will include a bagels, muffins and coffee greeting for arrivals before 12:p.m. and a pot luck luncheon afterwards and throughout the day. We will provide grilled kosher hot dogs, fixings, a variety of sandwiches, goodies from the garden, etc. for lunch. We request help with beverages, side dishes, desserts and paper goods.

If you plan to come let me know here or by DMail. I will create a list under this post. You may bring one non-DG guest. Please communicate with me by D Mail if you would like anyone else to join your group. We reserve the right to limit additional outside guests though we try to be accommodating.

This is a chance to meet and greet other DG members and share plants. The opportunities to gain one of a kind plants and friendships are nonpareil. If you are a commercial grower please conduct your business or marketing elsewhere and not on this thread. If you sell plants legitimately through DG you can bring plants sold prior to the RU for delivery.

Our location is within seven miles of downtown Cleveland, GA.. We will provide a map and directions to the final RSVP list right before the RU. We will provide information on motel accommodations if requested. There are several budget friendly options. The area and time are beautiful for weekending. If I hear from singles desiring to share space I will connect you for room sharing.

If you are new to DG or RUing and have questions, please ask. Don't be shy. Some of us have met at past RUs, some of us have never met but have become posting friends over the years here at DG.

Do not bring pets. We have two large dogs that are fenced during the RU. Our large game hound does not take to other animals on the property. When she's unhappy, everyone is unhappy.

*This is a reminder to bring sunscreen, a hat and a folding camp chair if you can spare one.
Thanks,
Laurel

Lula, GA

Thanks so much for hosting again, Laurel. This will be #4?

Where do we sign up??

I have been busy for another RU I am attending April 20, so I already have plants potted up for the Maypop RU, as I potted up extras.

Looking forward to it!

Brenda

This will be the fourth and we are delighted to host. Having a few or many gardening friends come spend the day is delightful. Brenda, consider yourself signed up and let me know if Sandy or other family/friends are joining you. The list will start now with the editing of my post above. Names will go at the bottom of that post and who is bringing what will be added closer to the date.

I'll be back in Atlanta next week and can start a trade thread going then. There's still lots of time. If you lose me for a few days it's because I'm traveling.

Dahlonega, GA

Add me , Digger, maybe Johnny

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I will, Sally. We are just back to Georgia. After a few days spent catching up in Atlanta we will be off to Maypop to start planting in earnest.

Lula, GA

Yes, Laurel, Sandy is coming along with me!

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I have added names to the guest list. In looking at some old attendees I see Ken, our resident videographer, is not a current subscriber.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

We are a month away from the June 8th date and things have been pretty quiet in regards to people committing for a RU. I'm willing to hold the date open for a time but please don't leave me hanging. If you are interested in coming and think you can get there let me know so I can make appropriate plans. If there is little interest in a group event we can arrange a small gathering and swaps among friends by DM.

LMK if you think I should open a trade thread.

I can come. Hopefully Ralph can come with me. I will see if Crystal/ Goldhillal can come also.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Oh, I just answered your DM before I saw this, Elfie. You and Ralph will be added for sure! Tap Crystal and let me know.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Our guest list is growing. You can see who has responded to date under my first post. I will start a trade thread and reserve my space. I'll be off line shortly for the next day or two but feel free to post.

Dahlonega, GA(Zone 7b)

I will likely be in Ohio that weekend. As time gets closer, I may decide not to go to Ohio, so I'm only a distant maybe.

Laural, Our granschildren will be with us on the 8th. They are 15 & 12 years old. Goober is a paid member on DG under the name of Goober-fairy. Gryphon is the oldest and they are mostly well behaved. After all they are in thier teens....lol

So my question is will they be able to attend with us?

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Absolutely! We have very loose rules we put in to play when a former DGer instigated a flash crash to our RU on other sites. He was asked to retract his announcements of our RU by me and then admin. He has since been removed from DG . I subsequently imposed rules. Really, bring who you like just be fair in letting us know in advance so we can plan food.

We welcome families, friends, friends of friends, kids, grands, etc.. We are not equipped to handle hundred s of people at Maypop but certainly dozens.

We are currently in Miami. Will return to Atlanta's next week and then have only a few days to get to Maypop and prepare for our gathering. It would help enormously to not have to second guess people's intentions.

Will let you know by Friday as to our exact count. Will talk to Gwen by then and make sure she and her hubby are coming. Also will let you know if the kids will come with us or spend the day swimming at the park with thier Uncle.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I will not be in GA 'til next week and come home to out of town guests. No rush regarding letting us know. We have DG friends meeting us for an event in Miami this weekend and have house guests.

Forgive...I'm challeged communicating on a phone keyboard. Let me know your plans when settled.

Sure thing.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

We have returned to Atlanta. Will be here a few days and then off to Maypop. Then back here for a little work and house guests.

At this time our group is small enough that we will not need much this year. Guests are still welcome to join us. **All we will need is a couple of bags of ice, soft drinks, a few sides to go with grill food and a couple of desserts.** Let me know what you would like to bring and I'll post it by your name at the top. If you can't bring something it's okay to bring yourself.

There will be bagels, muffins and spreads for early birds along with coffee. Hotdogs and sliders plus toppings are covered. I'll make iced tea and fill in side dishes if needed. We will provide chocolate dipped shortbread cookies. We have paper goods, plasticware and napkins left from the kids wedding weekend events.

Lula, GA

We will be a small group this time, Laurel............I will talk to Sandy about us bringing a collective dessert!

See you in two weeks!

Brenda

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

We are looking forward to visiting whoever can join us. Those who know us know we are pretty casual. A small gathering will enable me to share time and plants in the garden. Since it is small I will have additional plants to share. A few finger poppies http://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=CAPE23 to dig, lots of tiger lily seedlings, potted blue fescue (festuca glauca), rose campion...I can't name everything.

Brenda, do the Tricyrtis come up at different times? I've got some up and some not. Would like more if available. I love the plants and flowers. Thinking snails do too.

Would like to have volunteers for ice and a few sides like slaw and beans. We would rather not have to go out the morning of the RU to buy ice. I can do potato salad. I have home canned savory beans if that works for ya'll.

We will bring ice. How much should we bring?? Also can bring slaw and or beans.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

One big bag or two small should do it. Slaw would be great. Thanks a bundle, Elfie. As usual I am running. Finishing up the main planting of the summer garden then back to Atlanta tomorrow to get ready for house guests later this week. Then back here for a few days of pre-gathering chores, then back to Atlanta again then back here to kick back for a day with you guys. I'm ready for some serious relaxing.

Dahlonega, GA

Shall I make an old fashioned peach cobbler with poured crust rising ?

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

That would be sweet, Sally. :)

Lula, GA

Laurel and Kris............I will bring plenty of tricyrtis with me. Do you know which ones came up, Laurel? They make a good ground cover.
See y'all soon!

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I'll check. I can't believe hey aren't going o come given how well they bloomed and spread in a couple of months

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Guess I had a sticky "t" in the last post.

Brenda, I looked at the Trycyrtis yesterday and have now forgotten the ones that made it and the ones that didn't. It is obviously a critter problem. There are tunnels nearby the ones that didn't. I Googled Tricyrtis and voles and it seems there is a match. Still, I love the plants and flowers and would like to try more.

I need one package of hot dog buns as I have two in the freezer but am one short of the hot dog count. Is there a volunteer? There will be no soda, which is fine with us, unless someone want's to bring some. I have tea and spring water. Ran across some frozen peach nectar from last season's canning that I can defrost. We will have Elfie's slaw, my potato salad, and a four bean salad for sides. Any additional sides would be welcome. I've got the early bird food covered.

Dahlonega, GA

On your count , how many are you expecting ? I'll go from there .

There will be 4 total in our car.

Dahlonega, GA

See you tomorrow .

Lula, GA

Thanks, Laurel..........I will bring plenty of tricyrtis.............and the best vole control and really the only reliable vole control I have found is an outdoor hunting cat!!!

Brenda

Dahlonega, GA

Is there a common name for tricyrtis ? What is it ?

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Toad lilies.

Sally, we will be about a dozen. We are usually twelve to eighteen. Sometimes a few drop in last minute or some drop out. Except for Mike, it's our usual bunch.

I have 22 hot dogs and 16 buns. Am one package short. We don't drink soda so if anyone coming does please bring some. There will be coffee in addition to other beverages mentiond. I'll have bagels, spreads and muffin tops out until the Grillmaster cranks up the grill in the early afternoon.

Lula, GA

Laurel..............I have the buns...........Publix brand!!!

Brenda

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Brenda.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Finally, badly needed rain is here. Maybe a bit of housework is in order.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

The weather forecast has been a work in progress. A few days ago the chance of rain was 60% and now it's 20%. Are we still committed to a small get together come the proverbial hell or high water? We look forward to seeing any and all. Just want to make sure we don't over plan food. If the day turns wet we can set up trades and BBQ in the tractor shed. Some of our most fun gatherings have been in the rain when BBQ's have moved indoors or under the overhangs. As long as you're with me.

Dahlonega, GA

Why not ?Stay dry and enjoy the day , friends .

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I was hoping to hear that. We are 100% on unless there is a baby call.

Lula, GA

We are in.......
.......and let it rain. Altho now it looks like we are not supposed to get any. Lots of pop-ups this time of year and they don't last long anyway!! The forecast changes day by day and even hour to hour!!
