Growing in Hawaii: ID's please

I visited my son in Hawaii and he had these short bushes, about 3' tall with red flowers on top. I gathered some seeds that look like large black bee-bees. Could they be crocosmania?

That is Canna indica, Indian Shot.

In Hawai'i we call it "ali'ipoe". The seed is placed inside of gourds and other containers to make rattles.

Thanks so much. Obviously won't grow here but maybe? Indoors?? Probably needs high humidity. I will look up your references. Thanks again.
