Don't add amendments to soil when planting trees or shrubs.

This is not new information but I was not aware of it till a few months ago, so I thought I would post a link here. The article in short is saying when planting woody perennials(trees and shrubs) not to amend the soil, but instead to use mulch on top.

I read a few interesting posts by Linda Chalker-Scott, one of the Garden Professors, regarding planting trees. She wants the trees roots in native soil. Here's a link to one such post.

Monday, I purchased 7 new hedges to replace old ones that will be dug up. And, Sunday, my tree trimmer is coming to give me a quote on relocating at least 5 shrubs and 2 Crepe Myrtle Trees!

I sure needed all that reading and researching!

I am not so sure this applies to Blueberry bushes! They have special needs! They like acidic
soil, and I have read the best thing to plant them in is a pine bark mulch. I would recommend doing specific research on planting Blueberry bushes.

That's true. I also realize that they have very shallow root systems, so itmay be just fine to amend within a space that is larger than the root system.
