My Grandmother and Grandfather used to use tin cans to grow their starts in before plastic pots. It has stuck with me through the years.
Painting the inside and out with rust preventive paint greatly increases their life after the holes have been drilled or punched in,... and with a little extra wire for handles are added, (hardware cloth, Chicken wire or such make great wraps) they can last for years and be fun. With a liner of glass or plastic they are great for floral arrangements. Tin cans to treasure!
