Gas fireplace conversion

I have a gas fireplace in the house I built in 1997. It is two-sided and does not put out much heat because the glass enclosures are always closed. I have stopped using it.

I have always preferred a wood fireplace and want to convert the gas to wood. Does anyone have advice on the process and cost?
