I lost my four sweet pet chickens to a bobcat or strong dog. Having designed/built the coop myself (w/ some carpentering help), I'm feeling especially bad that they were not safe. I plan to reinforce the run area under the coop and get new girls in the Spring. Only my Red Star laid eggs this winter. The Americana, Silver Lakenvelder, and Australorp stopped in late October. Any suggestions for good laying breeds hardy in the heat and humidity here in South Mississippi?
Birds Killed; Trying Again - Best Layers 4 Heat/Humidity?
We have several breeds that keep laying all winter: Barred Rocks, Partridge Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Ameraucanas, Silver Laced Wyandottes, and Red Sex Links. They all do fine in our heat and humidity too. The lighter breeds we've had like the summer but don't lay well in winter.
my rhode island reds are laying very well
