I have a cunninghamia lanceolata planted next to my deck.
By all appearances it has been thriving and is now ~20ft tall.
I noticed today it has several points where sap is running down the trunk.
It's too high for me to get a close look at the source on the trunk.
Is this just from some sort of sapsucking bird or is it a more ominous sign?
There's no other sign of ill health, at least nothing I've noticed.

Looks like damage from a woodpecker-like bird (sapsuckers are in that clan), but hard to say for sure from just those two images.
Would you show an image of the whole tree? Surely you have a nice tall ladder to get out there in this wintry weather, to climb up and do closeup forensics.

Actually, it's a beautiful winter day here today. Nice day to be out and about.
But, sorry, the fireman's ladder stays in the garage.
I don't want to get anywhere near to those lethal cunninghamia needles!

The tree looks fine to me. My folks used to use aluminum plates on string to keep birds away from the garden.
