Lily lifespan

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Does anyone know if there are varieties of lilies that just poop out after a few years?
Some of mine came on strong but are now thinner stems and smaller bulbs.
Garden Treasure is one as id Shocking.
The asiatics never seem to stop multiplying and while I am thinking about it the shrinking lilies all seem to be LA's or OT's.

I have had Shocking since 2009-2010, and it doesn't seem to be pooping out yet. This is the best bloom year since it's been planted. I fertilize with Bulb Food, and the lily bulbs also get inadvertenly fertilized by composted manure, since they're in a bed close to peonies that I put it on. My Shocking had close to 100 blooms this summer, and seems to be multipliyng well, with really thick stems.

How long have you had the lily bulbs that seem to be pooping out, and how do you fertilize them? I'm still a newbie when it comes to the lilies, so I'll be interested to see what is said about why the lilies might decrease their blooming. Would they also decrease blooming if they need to be divided?

I have this question on another site and the lily experts there seem to think Orientals only have vigor for a few years.
I feed with BulbTone after bloom and when the plants emerge in spring.
I planted these bulbe in 2008 and in 2010 they had tree trunks and grew 7 feet tall.
This year there were more stems, shorter lilies and smaller blooms. We also had a freakie spring.
#1 Nice pix from 2009
#2 79 inches tall with 2 inch diameter stemsin 2010
#3 2011 Stems are shorter
#4 2012 bloomed earlier with thin stems and half as tall
I hope they recover and return to the 2011 size.

I have Casablancas that are really going away no matter what the spring weather is like.
I am resighned to replace lilies that just poop out.

I find that orientals definitely do poop out quickly, with exceptions. I remember ordering six different once from B&D and none bloomed at all. They kindly substituted Sorbonne, which does well. There was a thread a few years back about it. Casablanca does well under very strict conditions. I had 12 in gravel next to my house and they thrived. Once they were getting overshadowed and I had to move them they died out.

I find that Crystal Blanca does very well in ordinary soil, as does Acapulco (which B&D gave me as a test lily). My feeling now is that most Orientals they must have very well prepared, quite acid soil, which for me limits them to pots. I'm testing a few other orientals for their ability to return. I'll know more next spring.

This is all really interesting. I have a few orientals and they seem to be doing okay. Most all my soil is acid so that might explain it. I will pay more attention next year to which are orientals, when I planted them and /or moved them and how they are doing. I actually did move several this year to simply rearrange two beds.

Yep, Mary, it's the acid soil. I have my speciosum alba in pots with soil I ph balanced, and I am about to put some "dinged" speciosum Uchida from B &D in the same kind of soil. I realize now why they only lasted a year or two.

Humph. I had three of those -- huge bulbs but they never made it to opening. I traded them away. They were in a bed out front that had soil in it from somewhere else. That may be why the peony there never does as well as another in the back yard (same peony ). Interesting. The lilies there were huge this year but it was there first year. Be interesting to see how they do next year.

It seems gardeners need a lot of patience.Lilies are worth waiting for.

Another lily question.
Looking at the garden today and noticed LOTS of vole trails but either deer or voles have unearthed this crown of babies lily bulbs.
Can I just replant them to keep from freezing or drying out?

South Lake Tahoe, CA(Zone 6a)

Yes, replant the lily bulbs in a container that is at least 6" deep.
Container can be stored in the garage until warmer weather arrives then
replanted in the garden in a wire mesh container (covered in wire) so that
the voles can not get to them.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Its still warm here for another day.I will pot them for replant later.

South Lake Tahoe, CA(Zone 6a)

Lucky it is warm in your area.
We hit a record low of -17 degrees.
Another breaking record yesterday was -12 degrees.
Had to wear hand warmers in my boots while working outside this weekend.

The weather map was amazing tonight. The country almost cut in half south to north with cold on the west coast and heat on the east.
We are back to January weather this week.

South Lake Tahoe, CA(Zone 6a)

Currently at 5:39 am it is minus 9 degrees
Will reach 25 degrees above zero today.
Bid warmer from the weekend.

We are sitting at +37 and rain for the second day; flooding in some spots where the drains are frozen and can't take the water. Pond is almost ice free. No break in warm spell in sight

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

No break in the warm spell! Yum!

I hope the drains aren't giving you too many problems.

Are the daffodils sprouting?

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

lol. No, not here. Still too much snow and I surely hope nothing else sprouts either. The snow in the back yard on the grass is only about 6" deep and disappearing fast. I worry about my peonies, daffy's and such that pop in the spring. We will surely have much colder weather in February and March.

South Lake Tahoe, CA(Zone 6a)

Place more mulch on the peonies to protect them.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Our weather has returned to a normal January. It's a bit depressing to be reminded how far off April is.

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

Yes. Mulch would help keep them asleep. We dipped to 31 this morning. Still way warm. God forbid when the roads freeze up again. They shut down the schools for one day which is a big deal here. But the outlying areas, especially in the foothills were darned near impassible.

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 10b)

Oberon46, If it makes you feel any better, So. Cal is having the same lows as Anchorage...without the benefit of snow. My lilies are sprouting and my tropicals are suffering . It just doesn't seem right that Santa Ana, Ca. is having the same temps as Anchorage, Ak. LOL! Our highs have been in the high 50s, and are going up, so they say, this week, but it's not helping the tourism industry. LOL!

South Lake Tahoe, CA(Zone 6a)

Black Ice on roads causing accidents to many non-locals.

Pipes freezing at all 4 local casinos causing flooding.
One Casino had its stand pipe (the fire department connection) break on the 18th floor and flooded the Hotel with several thousands of gallons of water. Flooding in the elevators and restaurants. Then the Spinkler heads froze and discharged in the high limit gaming area onto guests. Such a mess.
Fire Dept on scene for safety of the guests in case a fire broke out.

Finally a tad bid warmer today.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Freezes are awful to those who arent used to them

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 10b)

Oh my! That didn't make our local news...and in the middle of ski season too.

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

Holy cow! What a disaster for both the guests and the casino's. That will cost them a bundle in a variety of ways. Guess they can afford it though. We are settling down to low 20's now and it has been snowing kind of mid-range all day. I would prefer it stayed this way til real spring came along.

Yeah. That is a hoot that California has the same temp as us. We are on the coast and we get the Japanese current with warm air quite often. Plus I am in a warmer micro-climate that the rest of Anchorage anyway. Glad my plants are getting more snow cover although they had a good foot over them even after the melt down.
