Choosing a shade tree

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I need to replace the ornamental pear that we took down
Don't want a new one to be too wide but can be pretty tall

Please give me some suggestions and explain why you like the tree
Thanks!

I get my initial ideas from Dirr's Hardy Tress and Shrubs. Maybe you'd like a red or crimson oak. They are supposed to host an enormous amount of wildlife (over 200 species of insects, mammals and birds), if you can wait as long as it takes for it to grow up.

Magnolia?

Dogwood - one of the rutger's hybrids, if i had the room it would be Venus - http://www.rarefindnursery.com/index.cfm/action/productdetail/product_id/3915.htm

oooo that dogwood is GORGEOUS!

yes it is - although not sure it meets your shade tree requirement although it will get as large as a bradford pear. For a pure shade tree a sugar maple is aways a good choice and nice fall color.

Define 'not too wide'. Some of these suggested ones are pretty wide.

It's for the property line, I can move it in toward the yard a little but not too far cause our shed is to the right of where the tree is located

To provide shade for the neighbors?!

LOL, no for us to sit under, kids to play under, dog to lay under
