Peony trading
I don't have any peonies to trade, but would like to know if you know of any peonies that are very heat tolerant... I was given some peonies that I brought back from Michigan. I babied them along but they slowly died from the extreme heat in Phoenix...
Peonies may do well if cared for properly in zones 8 and up.
Keep in mind that Peonies do not like being disturbed once planted.
So. if you have the patience , this what I would recommend:
1. Potting them in very large container (20") for their roots to grow in very
rich organic soil not more then 1 1/2 to 2 inches below the soil surface.
2. Place the potted peony in a location away from direct sun and keep the
soil cool and very moist, not allowing the top of the soil to feel dry,
but not saturating.
3. Once the plant has flowered, allow the foliage to die back naturally and
then cut to about 3-6 inches.
4. To allow the plant to go into dormancy for approx 3-6 months in your zone,
place ice cubes around the top of the soil ( away from the crown) every few days.
Ice cubes will keep the soil cold, but will not freeze the soil or roots.
Patience is the key and if you are determined to grow a peony in your zone, then
this is my recommendation.
