Sort of a safety/ traveling/ being a cheapskate question.
Going to a comedy club in Greenwich Village, 8 pm show, staying at hotel in Chelsea. Do we get a cab home after the show or take subway? Does it just depend on how close the subway its to the hotel and club?

As someone who worked in Manhattan for years, your best bet is to take a cab. If you can get one. Although the subway is relatively safe, I always opt for a cab that late at night.
It really isn't that much money to take a cab.
