Has anyone here tried their hand at crossing hostas ?
Hosta Hybridizing
Hi Mitt,
Yes I have.
Consider myself a seed grower vs a hybridizer though. I keep track of crosses. But don't go so far as to protect the flowers from the bees doing their thing to.
It is really a lot of fun. And if you grow a lot of seeds you will come up with a "garden worthy" hosta now and then.
Below are a coulple pics from 2011.
The first is actually a sport off another seedling.
The second is an open polinated seedling from H. 'Galaxy'.
John
Wow Johnny, that seedling is a beauty!!
Wow!!!, I am impressed!!!~
Belle
I love the second seedling, and I'm not usually one for streakers =) Beautiful form!
Gorgeous.
I save seeds and start them, but I don't try to beat the bees or even to deliberate crosses. But of the hundreds of seedlings, I've had a few that I've kept. The newest pics are on my older computer; so I'll post some when it's booted.
I did my first crosses last weekend. So far a few show signs of taking and forming pods. :-) I put string tags on the ones I cross so I can keep records of what was used. Tons of pods from the bees too. Many pods on the blue hostas this year. Will see what i get.
Fingers crossed....
Kyle :-)
