Ramps after the leaves are gone

Cherry Grove, OH(Zone 6b)

The obvious sign of these delicious bulbs, the leaves, have gone now. So, for many the Ramp gathering season is over. But if you know what to look for, you can still collect ramps throughout the year. After the leaves die back, the small stem and flower bud arrives. Looking much like a diminutive garlic scape (but usually erect rather than curly) it's small but distinctive. Crushing the flower bud gives off the typical onion/garlic scent of the Ramp. As always, if you are new to foraging or are unsure of the plant ID, DON'T EAT IT. Have a local expert verify your ID first.

Here are some pictures of the Ramp flower stem and bud. Later I'll take some flower and seed pictures.

Three weeks later than the post above. Photo #2 is with a backdrop of a pair of men's XL sized gloves to give some sense of scale.
