Finally it is that time of the year. What is your favorite/best emerging leaf? I'm torn between my Tulip tree and the European Beeches.
Emerging leaves
Hickories (Carya sp.)...
any one of the hunderds of japanese maples or maybe the tri-colored beech
Peonies.
Bright new growth on Hemlocks.
Or the awakening of a naked Bald Cypress in the spring....

Hickories are beautiful and the Hickory pic is stunning. I love the Hawthorns, too, and although all of the big ones near our cabin in NC have died (so sad!) there are still quite a few small ones around and I keep hoping one of them will be the one that can endure the woolly adelgid. Are they still doing OK in KY?
I think you mean Hemlock?
They are still hanging on in the eastern KY mountains, but no one believes that they'll avoid the coming threat of wooly adelgid.
I don't know where Hawthorn came from, it's late. Sometimes I just reach for a noun. Hemlock is what I was thinking. Thanks for the correction. I'm glad they're hanging on for you there.
I think it was in West Virginia back in February where I saw SEVERAL Hemlocks infested.
VV, have you been to the plant sale at the Louisville Nature Center? I plan on going this Saturday.
I just got back from Washington DC (since Wednesday).
I haven't been to the LNC plant sale, though it is located in the same park where my office is. It's always on the weekend - a bit far for me to go on the day off.
