Moving Dutch Iris

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

My husband ran over the Dutch Iris with the rear tire of a riding lawn mower. They were on the edge of the garden. The leaves are anywhere from one inch to three inches tall. He really damaged them. I am moving these DI as I am not offering them up for slaughter again next year. Is it okay to move them now?

As long as you are able to move most of the roots with it, I don't see why you can't move them now. They may undergo a little shock, but will hopefully recover. I have often accidentally dug up small plants due to over-vigorous weeding, and replaced them, and they do OK.

Good Luck!

Thanks, I am just a little concerned. The leaves are only about 1 to 2 inches. The bulbs aren't going to get much nourishment from the leaves this year. Do you think I should give them some bone meal?
