Need help with my HP Compact F700 Notebook PC Monitor

When I turn my laptop on the monitor with go black after a few seconds so I am using a desk top monitor... Is there some setting I need to check out for my laptop monitor? If the monitor was out, would it come on for a few seconds then go black?
