I plant a large bed of annuals each year, trying to use loud, striking colors. The last 2 years I have planted a mass of Zinnia elegans Zowie. They're striking and bloom forever. But, I need a change.
I'm looking at Burpee Zinnia Pop Art Red and Yellow: http://www.burpee.com/flowers/zinnias/zinnia-pop-art-red-and-yellow-prod002568.html?catId=&trail= However, I can't find any details about it. I've looked for trial data and found none. The Burpee website only shows the flower head and not the plant. I can't tell if it would be as good as Zowie, but the bloom looks very interesting. Can anyone help with this question, please? It is a real commitment to buy the seeds, start them inside, and plant 30 - 40 in a garden.
Zinnia - Burpee Pop Art Red and Yellow???
Based on the plant height of 2 - 3 feet, Pop Art is probably a selection from Peppermint Stick
http://parkseed.com/zinnia-peppermint-stick/p/02227-PK-P1/
and not from the other heirloom striped zinnia, Candy Cane
http://www.burpee.com/flowers/zinnias/zinnia-candy-cane-mix-prod001069.html?catId=cat100022&trail=
which has a plant height of only 17 inches.
"I can't tell if it would be as good as Zowie, but the bloom looks very interesting."
From a distance, you won't really see those stripes. They will just look like rich yellow medium sized (3 to 4 inches in diameter) dahlia flowered blooms. I used to be interested in striped zinnias, and started crossing Peppermint Sticks and Candy Canes with cactus flowered zinnias, hoping to get striped spider flowered zinnias. I did get some striped cactus flowered zinnias, and they were kind of interesting.
But I changed my opinion of the striped "broken color" effect. Incidentally, some Peppermint Sticks are spotted instead of striped. Occasionally a striped zinnia would show up unexpectedly, like in this scabious flowered recombinant in the picture. I quit growing striped and spotted zinnias altogether because I didn't want to "infect" my gene pool with that trait. Bees will make crosses between your zinnias even if you don't.
You might like Pop Art zinnias, but I am a "zinnia nut", and I don't plan to grow any. Not because they aren't good zinnias, they probably are. But just because I don't care for the striped/spotted effect.

Thank you for the information. I think that Burpee often gives inaccurate names and incomplete info. I agree with you about spotted Zinnias and will probable find an alternative.
