what to use for back-up

on a mac.
i only want to back my photos up and i am told that all i need is one of those tiny flash drives or zip drives. i have a macbook, a couple of years old.
can anyone tell me just what to buy?
my macbook for dummies says not to use a flash drive but doesn't say why really.
