Data recovery needed

My external hard drive, full of hundreds of thousands of photos from all over the world just decided to stop working a few days ago... now it just clicks and whirs a bit. Contacted a data recovery service and OMG! The cost they quoted me is incredible.. might be able to fly back to Thailand and Singapore and take the photos over again for less. Yikes. Any suggestions?
