Waxmoths

West Babylon, NY(Zone 7a)

I heard honeybee hives are often invaded by waxmoths. I am curious if in states like New York do these moths live here being winters get to freezing? Waxworms are sold as feeder insects for frogs and lizards and I know at pet stores the moths sometimes escape and fly outside and we have wild honeybee hives here.

Wax moths live in New York. They are not active in cold weather though. Supposedly they are not a problem for strong hives. They are a problem for beekeepers who store their supers in a heated building over the winter. If supers can be stored where it is cold over the winter, and then put onto a strong hive in the spring, there should not be a problem.
