Dying Oak Trees

Waldron, AR

We have a coating of dirt on our three big oak trees. It looks like the mud used by dirt dobbers to build a home. But it is practically covering the trunks of these trees. Can we save the trees? Or must we cut them down?

Can you start by hosing the trees off? I don't know that mud dobbers would actually bore into the tree and cause internal damage. I think the concern would be excessive moisture around the trunk, being constantly wet and not allow air circulation would.
What does the canopy of the tree look like when it it leafed out? Is it healthy, or does it show signs of distress? Like sparse or yellowing foliage? Is there significant dieback?
