Dog heating pad?

Any of you have experience using a pet heating pad, electrical or not? There are warmers that are heated in the microwave and said to stay warm for 8-10 hrs. The issue of safety/fire w/ electrical heating pads concerns me. We would leave the dog, black lab, in the garage for 8-10 hrs @ a time. We do not have lots of real cold days in this climate but 35 degrees lately.
