Missing icons

There is a total of nine icons that have gone missing from my bookmarks toolbar; there are empty dotted-line outlined squares in their place. I can't remember if this coincides with the last Firefox update, but it's possible. It's been a week or so. I don't see anything on FF Help or in a google search that applies.
I am using Windows XP on an ancient HP 501N computer. Can anyone tell me what caused this?
