Maybe I misread another article some time ago but isn't the common name for the many trees lining French streets = London Planetree?

Not quite; it's London Plane. Or, in France, Platane comun. The plane native in southeastern Europe and SW Asia is Oriental Plane (Platane d'Orient in French).
