The patent on 'Blue Shadow' says it was a basal sport mutation of Fothergilla major 'Mt. Airy'. http://www.patentgenius.com/patent/PP15490.html so its origin is certain. Unfortunately, Mt. Airy's parentage is a little less certain...it is a hybrid that was discovered by Michael Dirr at Mt. Airy Arboretum; MOBOT says that it may be a cross between F. major and F. gardenii http://www.mobot.org/gardeninghelp/plantfinder/plant.asp?code=B705 So the short answer is that I don't think anyone knows for sure; some sites will probably have it one way and some will have it the other and some will probably say it's a cross between the two. But if Michael Dirr who discovered 'Mt. Airy' didn't know exactly what it was a hybrid of then I don't think most other people would have any better authority to state its parentage with any certainty.

i got my two originals small from rarefind nursery about 3-4 years ago - those two are now 3.5' tall by the same wide - had to trim them back this year. i have 4 others (2 locally another 2 from rarefind) that are only at the end of the first year and still getting started.
