Hardy (zone 4B) grasses, Overwintering less hardy

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

I would like to grow more varieties of grasses than I do. Many ornamental grasses say zone 5 hardy.
I have had much luck with Miscanthus Purpurensis (Flame Grass), this is sometimes called zone 5 hardy but grows well in zone 4B. If I would try planting some of the other miscanthuses, would it help to add a mulch to the area?
What about the ones that are often sold as annuals such as purple foxtail - could this be overwintered in a barely heated garage?

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

I would say yes. I have overwintered nasella tenuissima (formerly called stipa), a tender grass, several times. It doesn't bloom in cold climates until the second year.
