Yarn/knitting bowls?

Afternoon all,
Has anyone ever made a yarn/knitting bowl?
A friend is an avid knitter and has asked me to make her several knitting bowls. They arre turning out ok EXCEPT for the curly "Q". If anyone has made one and has the secret for this curl let me know. :-)
