Pomegranate

Choudrant, LA

We have a very old pomegranate bush/tree that has produced an abundance of beautiful fruit most years and just before they ripen the fruit will burst open and rot. Does anyone know what we can do to prevent this?

Harvest them a bit earlier and let them ripen off the plant?

Since Pomegranate is a semi-desert plant, I'd guess perhaps it is getting more water than ideal, and it keeps pumping water into the developing fruit for too long.

Thanks Resin. I was not sure that they would continue to ripen off the plant. I will try it.

At a guess, best to wait as long as you can before harvesting - pick just when you see the first one start to split.
