Laptop WiFi - need advice, please

Rosemont, ON(Zone 4a)

I recently bought a laptop computer, but I don't have WiFi at home, just a dial-up line that is connected to my DH's PC. I take my laptop to a cafe with WiFi in a town about 10 miles away to connect to the Internet. I'd like to be able to use my laptop at home, and I understand that there is a "stick" that plugs into the USB port of a laptop and which can be used to connect to WiFi anywhere. The "stick" works using cell phone technology and is priced according to the amount of data you download. The thing is - I have no idea how much data I will be downloading, so how do I figure out what the "stick" will cost me? I would be using it to:
Update my virus protection (and some of the files are large - it took 15 minutes to download the upgrade last time I was at the cafe)
Send and receive e-mail
Use Google maps
Order stuff online
Download e-books

Both of the major cell providers in this area (Bell and Rogers) have plans that cost from $30 to $70/month, depending on the amount of data you expect to download. Once you sign up for a plan, there are penalties for early termination, so I want to make sure I get the right one. Any guidance will be appreciated!
