plaster of paris for casting

Has anyone used plaster of paris for making a casting of a leaf or similar item? I want to make a casting of a wonderfully sculptural bracket fungus, but I dont know what material to use to make the casting. The fungus is fairly firm, but moist like a typical mushroom. I'm concerned about the moisture in the fungus preventing the plaster of paris from setting up.
