I live in Minnesota and my daughter does as well. This Spring she had four baby blue herons in her fenced yard (which is not huge but good sized and has lots of cover). She never saw the parents. They have a tiny, tiny pond which may or may not have had goldfish.

After a month or two they were gone. She had to monitor the dogs when she let them out but they never discovered the babies.

I trhink having them in your yard is very wierd. I would think they would go to larger lakes or streams with more fish.

Well this one is in a small canal, many of the Herons fish in small retention ponds around here. And I know people that have found them eating out of their backyard fish ponds....they can't keep the goldfish in them. They must enjoy the small fish.
