ID needed for fungus at the base of a White Oak tree

Kinston, NC

This one was growing against the trunk but various shaped ones have grown within several feet of the trunk. They start out white and eventually flatten out and turn dark before essentially melting into a nasty looking mess.

Also, suggestions for good amateur level identification guides covering eastern NC would also be greatly appreciated.
