This one was growing against the trunk but various shaped ones have grown within several feet of the trunk. They start out white and eventually flatten out and turn dark before essentially melting into a nasty looking mess.
Also, suggestions for good amateur level identification guides covering eastern NC would also be greatly appreciated.

It may be a lactarius and one does show a Indigo lactarius I only have a small book and it says the lactarius all will exude a milk in diferent colors according to the variety with the most popular one has a reddish orange milk
